Alternative Energy and Fuels Technology:
A Strategic Update

Multi-client Study Proposal

Launched as a study proposal in 2004, and then published by The Catalyst Group Resources (TCGR) in July/August 2005, “Alternative Energy and Fuels Technology (AEFT)” was a groundbreaking two (2) volume multi-client report. This study quantified the current status of alternative energy and fuels technology in two broad areas – non-renewable and renewable – then identified more advanced R&D ideas and investment options where energy, petroleum and chemical companies could participate for growth, both in the short term (3-8 years) and the longer term (10-20 years).   Based on the report’s timing, in an era of $65/barrel oil (but forecast by industry to range $25-$45/barrel longer term), its conclusions and recommendations earned these studies industry recognition as visionary!  Over the last four (4) years, our clients have commented that they still refer to the study findings frequently, as a source of balanced data and conclusions, to help them in their daily decision making.

In the nearly four (4) years that have passed since these benchmarking studies were initiated, a significant number of changes have altered the supply/demand drivers.  These important alternate fuels areas now need to be reanalyzed and updated in light of sector changes in supply, security and political/regional influences, the least of which is $100+/barrel oil!   Due to the important changes which have occurred, TCGR is proposing a single volume update that compares and contrasts important changes to the landscape, the economics and the industry implications based on technology advances that have taken place over the last four (4) years.  This study will redefine the industry Base Case so that different producers can benchmark themselves and re-evaluate the opportunities still to be captured.

In this study, the major catalyst- and process-related R&D and commercialization efforts in advancing alternative energy technology will be reviewed and analyzed.  A listing of the projects which are in evaluation or development will be assessed for their competitiveness and potential impact.  Areas of focus for this “strategic update” will be limited to five (5) in the non-renewable area and five (5) in the non-renewable areas, as follows:

Non-renewables Renewables
Natural Gas Biomass
Coal   Solar/PV
Heavy Oil Wind
Coal Bed/Coal Mine Methane Geothermal
Gas Hydrates Hydroelectric

Critical factors to be documented and evaluated, in each alternative fuel area, include:

  • Technology development, R&D and opportunities
  • Competitive landscape and factors for success
  • Technology and investment analysis

Following each individual fuel update, we will provide commentary and analysis from an overall “alternative fuels” perspective, addressing such key external factors and financial considerations as:

  • Resource/materials availability
  • Outside interests (governmental, etc.)
  • Timing and market penetration
  • Capital outlays and operating parameters
  • Technological risks
  • Alternative investments outlets

The value of the report to subscribers is that it is an industrial-grade, technology and competitive benchmarking document, highlighting investment routes for new technologies for energy, petroleum and chemical companies, whether they are non-renewable or renewable based (or a mixture of both).  It has global strategic, commercial and technological uses and provides a serious guide for industry executives, for either offensive or defensive business decision making.

* Charter subscribers (those who sign up for the study before October 15tht, 2008) will have the opportunity to work with TCGR in defining the scope of the report by delineating areas of particular interest for inclusion in the assessment.

* * * Notice to Subscribers of TCGR’s original (2004) AEFT report* * *

Due to the complementary nature of this study to the 2004 AEFT report (AEFT I), we are offering a discounted price to subscribers of that original study.  Please contact Jeanne M. Drahos at +1-215-628-4447 or Jeanne.M.Drahos@catalystgrp.com in order to determine whether your company purchased that study and details regarding the discounted fees.  When completing the order form, please make sure to indicate your company’s subscription to the earlier AEFT (AEFT I) report.

In addition, subscribers who did not purchase the 2004 AEFT report may wish to do so now in order to gain immediate access to the original study’s findings and insights.  For this reason, AEFT I is available at a discounted rate when purchased with this “Strategic Update” study (AEFT II).  Please contact us for further details.
