Methanol and Ammonia Catalysis: Technical Advances and Impacts on the Future Competitive Landscape

The drive toward the “Hydrogen Economy” and the “Methanol Economy” simultaneously will continue to ensure that growth for both of these commodities will outpace GDP to 2030 and beyond. For methanol, this is due to its versatility, including as a feedstock to olefins, e.g., MTO, MTP, gasoline additive, etc. as well as a strong CO₂ sink and liquid hydrogen carrier (LOHC). Industrial investments in these leading market applications are already being committed by Air Products, Siemens, Alfa Laval, Haldor Topose, to name a few.

Licensors and consumers such as Johnson Matthey, HTAS, Air Liquide/Lurgi, MGC, Toyo, Casale and Thyssenkrupp/Uhde have major stakes in ensuring they remain well informed of this transition, as well as major users including Celanese, Ineos, Momentive, Skyford, SABIC and BASF.

For ammonia, the drive to replace the Haber-Bosch process, including routes for direct N₂ + H₂O, is receiving heightened attention by the majors, with an emphasis on reduced CO₂ /GHG footprints. Companies like Clariant, Casale, HTAS and others appreciate that the competitive landscape is changing and the role of catalysis cannot be overstated.
